Low-maintenance gardens for Lima's coastal climate

Lima has a particularity that many gardens still ignore: it is one of the largest capital cities in the world built on top of a desert. It barely rains, water is an expensive and limited resource, and yet we keep seeing projects that insist on sprawling lawns and species that demand daily watering. There is an alternative that fits far better with the place we live in, and it's visible to anyone who has climbed a coastal hill in winter: Lima's own nature solved this problem thousands of years ago.

What the lomas teach us about designing with what we have

In the hills surrounding Lima there are ecosystems called lomas costeras: strips of vegetation that survive with almost no rainfall, sustained mainly by the moisture of the garúa and winter fog. There, plants like tillandsias grow—they don't need roots in soil, absorbing humidity from the air directly through their leaves—along with various species of columnar cacti adapted to extreme aridity, plus shrubs and grasses that appear and disappear according to the fog season.

It is, quite literally, a garden that nature designed to work with our climate, not against it. Bringing that logic into a residential garden doesn't mean copying a grey, thorny desert landscape: it means learning the underlying principle, which is choosing plants adapted to the resources actually available, instead of forcing plants that demand a resource Lima simply doesn't have naturally.

Which plants actually make sense in a Lima garden

Xeriscaping—low-water garden design—starts by grouping plants according to their real water needs, rather than mixing everything under the same irrigation system. In a Lima garden, this opens the door to native or well-adapted species: tillandsias as an absolutely low-maintenance decorative element, columnar cacti like the haageocereus to provide vertical structure, agaves and succulents of different sizes, and hardy shrubs like the huarango, a tree native to the Peruvian coast that tolerates poor soils and dry climates with an ease no imported species can match.

To cover ground without resorting to a traditional lawn, ornamental grasses and hardy groundcovers serve the same aesthetic purpose with a fraction of the water consumption, while also helping to stabilize the soil and prevent erosion on sloped gardens—something common on Lima properties built on hillsides.

The most elegant garden isn't the one that consumes the most water: it's the one that understands where its climate comes from and responds to it with intelligence, not resistance.

The other elements that reduce maintenance

Plants are only part of the equation. Surface design matters too: using gravel, pebbles or decorative aggregates in unplanted areas not only cuts maintenance costs, but also helps preserve moisture in the substrate of planted areas. A drip irrigation system, rather than sprinklers, delivers water exactly where it's needed and reduces waste from evaporation—especially relevant in a climate with diffuse sunlight but relatively stable temperatures year-round.

Mulching—a layer of organic or mineral material over the soil—also plays a key role: it retains moisture, reduces weed growth, and protects roots from temperature swings between day and night.

How this looks in a real project

A low-maintenance garden doesn't have to feel austere. By combining textures—the volume of a columnar cactus, the delicacy of a hanging tillandsia, the greyish green of a native shrub—you achieve a landscape with a character all its own, distinct from any tropical or European garden, with the added advantage of feeling coherent with the real landscape surrounding Lima. Before asking for a garden "like the ones in European magazines," it's worth asking whether that garden actually makes sense in a coastal desert, or whether there's a version of your own, just as beautiful, that won't depend on daily watering to survive.
